Family Support for Addiction
Is your life affected by a loved one's addiction?
On 12/26/09, Melissa Weiksnar, MBA 1982, lost her 20 year old daughter Amy to a heroin overdose at a treatment facility. Subsequently, Melissa learned of other HBS grads dealing with similar issues. Further discussion revealed the isolation that comes with being spouses or parents of addicts, and the difficulty in finding support and effective resources. In addition, there is the unspoken stigma: whoever imagined that a Harvard MBA could be the parent or spouse of a drug addict or alcoholic?
Addiction is a Disease
Addiction is a disease that affects the whole family. According to Robert J. Ackerman, Ph.D., cofounder of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics,
"Alcoholism is a family disease. While it is important for the family to support the alcoholic's recovery, it is also important for members of the family to get involved in their own recovery. Family recovery decreases the chances that the children of alcoholics will repeat the pattern and engage in unhealthy relationships."
We’re Here to Help
If you have a loved one dealing with an addiction, join us in a supportive, confidential environment where you can share your fears and frustrations and learn from the experiences of other HBS grads and their families. This strictly anonymous program is being offered through the HBSAB and the HBSWA for HBS grads. No names will be shared with the clubs or the school.
